The 2009 State Athletic Directors Conference

The Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association is excited to once again bring the State Conference to the Holiday Inn and Convention Center in St. George, Utah.  The dates for this year’s conference are April 15-18, 2009.  The 29th annual conference will host over 250 athletic administrators, spouses, guests and exhibitors.  All Athletic Directors, Principals, Assistant Principals, and Athletic Administrators with responsibilities for athletics and activities are invited and encouraged to attend.  The UIAAA is offering LTC 502, LTC 505, LTC 508, and LTC 714.

Conference Site - The conference will be held in St. George, Utah, at the Holiday Inn Resort Hotel/Convention Center, 850 South Bluff St., St. George, Utah, 84770.   The Holiday Inn is the largest convention hotel in St. George, and is beautifully designed with amenities including the Palms restaurant and indoor/outdoor pool.  Rates are $87 for one to four persons.  Reservations may be requested and confirmed by phoning (1-800-457-9800), writing, or faxing (1-435-628-8157) any clerk.  To receive these rates you must mention that you are a member of the UIAAA.  Reservations must be made by March 15, 2009 to guarantee rate.  The hotel may sell out before that time so make your reservations early. 

Program Highlights The UIAAA and its Athletic Directors Advisory Council are pleased to present an outstanding cast of featured speakers this year, along with a wide variety of workshop topics.  Dr. Charlie Brown, Director of FPS Performance in North Carolina, will kick off the conference as the keynote speaker on Friday evening.  David Wilkey, Executive Director of the UHSAA, will be the featured speaker during the Second General Session, and provide attendees with important information regarding the UHSAA.  Attendees will not want to miss the Conference Luncheon on Saturday, April 18, when the UIAAA will honor five deserving individuals with awards.  The various workshop topics are listed under the tentative conference agenda found on the UIAAA webpage (uiaaa.org).  Most sessions will offer several choices for attendees.  

Golf Tournament – The UIAAA will host a Golf Tournament at 8:00 a. m., Friday, April 17, 2009.  Josten’s is once again generously sponsoring the tournament, which will be held at Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George.  See the registration form for cost.

UIAAA Functions – The CAA Examination will once again be offered at the state conference,

2:00 p. m. Friday April 17, 2009.  Information about the CAA examination, including the steps to qualify, cost, and a study guide, can be obtained at the NIAAA website (niaaa.org).  An administrator must have successfully completed LTC 501, LTC 502 and LTC 504 as part of the requirement to qualify to become a CAA.  Athletic Administrators are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to become a Certified Athletic Administrator while attending this year’s conference.

Many Leadership Training Courses will be offered on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning before the official beginning of the conference.  Below is a list of the courses offered this year.

LTC 502 Athletic Administration: Principles, Strategies and Methods.  This will be a separate leadership class and is not part of the regular conference.   This course takes a basic approach to the fundamentals and methods of athletic administration and alerts and educates athletic administrators regarding potential problems and possible solutions in areas such as budgets, transportation, and scheduling and parent/student/coach conflicts. The course also touches upon sample athletic/activity program philosophies, department organizational charts, activity procedures/checklist, public relations, coaching applications/assessments and emergency plans. Enrollees who will derive greatest benefit: Inexperienced athletic administrators seeking to define and improve their operational procedures.  Required for: RAA, CAA and CMAA Certification. 

LTC 506 Athletic Administration: Legal Issues II (Title IX, Sexual Harassment).  This will be a separate leadership class and is not part of the regular conference.  This course has in-depth coverage of compliance issues regarding Title IX and gender equity in an interscholastic athletic program, including the methodology for a school to perform a Title IX self-audit, and in-depth coverage of the issues and strategies related to the development of an effective policy for the prevention of sexual harassment in an interscholastic athletic program.  Enrollees who will derive greatest benefit: Administrators seeking strategies for minimizing legal challenges in each topic area.  Required for: CMAA Certification

LTC 508 - Athletic Administration: Legal Issues III – (Hazing, ADA, Employment Law) This will be a separate leadership class and is not part of the regular conference. This course will have in-depth coverage of the issues and strategies related to the development of an effective policy for prevention of hazing in an interscholastic athletics program, coverage of the constitutional and statutory issues affecting athletics programs, including the impact of disabilities legislation on school athletics, and coverage of employment law concerns affecting athletics programs, including contract law, equal pay, and FLSA issues.  Enrollees who will derive greatest benefit: Administrators seeking information concerning Hazing and Employment law and the need of exposure to causes for negligence and to legal “Standards of Care.”

LTC 714 Athletic Administration: Dealing With Challenging Personalities.  This will be a separate leadership class and is not part of the regular conference.  This course examines the causes of challenging or difficult personalities in society, with specific reference to interscholastic athletic programs. Basic management strategies include the use of emotional intelligence and transactional analysis considerations and methods. Specific protocols will be defined for dealing with individuals who “must be right,” “must win,” “must be logical” and “must be accepted.” In addition, techniques will be covered for preventing or responding to anger, sarcasm, denigration, complainers and backbiters and rigid-obstinate personalities. A model will also be discussed for creative interaction with parents who demand involvement in athletic department decision-making or who seek to influence the decisions of senior administrators.  Enrollees who will derive greatest benefit: Administrators seeking to understand the role of human personality in defining a challenging personality or behavior and seeking strategies for dealing with extremely aggressive, rigid, sarcastic passive or condescending personalities.

Conference Registration - Conference registration forms can be found on the UIAAA website (uiaaa.org).  Listening to the voice of our members, the conference has expanded our workshops from 4 to 6 and offered the LTC Wednesday night and Thursday morning, as well as more time for networking with fellow athletic administrators between sessions.  The conference registration fees will not be raised.  The fees will stay at $180 prior to January 31, 2009.  From February 1 until March 15, 2009 the fee is $200, and after that date and in person the fee will be $220.  The conference fee includes the following:
