The 2010 State Athletic Directors Conference

The Utah Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association is excited to once again bring the State Conference to the Holiday Inn and Convention Center in St. George, Utah.  The dates for this year’s conference are April 14-17, 2010.  The 30th annual conference will host over 260 athletic administrators, spouses, guests and exhibitors.  All Athletic Directors, Principals, Assistant Principals, and Athletic Administrators with responsibilities for athletics and activities are invited and encouraged to attend.  The UIAAA is offering LTC 501, LTC 504, LTC 630, and LTC 710.

Conference Site - The conference will be held in St. George, Utah, at the Holiday Inn Resort Hotel/Convention Center, 850 South Bluff St., St. George, Utah, 84770.   The Holiday Inn is the largest convention hotel in St. George, and is beautifully designed with amenities including the Palms restaurant and indoor/outdoor pool.  Rates are $86 for one to four persons.  Reservations may be requested and confirmed by phoning (1-800-457-9800), writing, or faxing (1-435-628-8157) any clerk.  To receive these rates you must mention that you are a member of the UIAAA.  Reservations must be made by March 15, 2010 to guarantee rate.  The hotel may sell out before that time so make your reservations early. 

Program Highlights The UIAAA and its Athletic Directors Advisory Council are pleased to present an outstanding cast of featured speakers this year, along with a wide variety of workshop topics.  Holly Farnese, CMAA, NIAAA Secretary the keynote speaker on Friday evening.  Two LTP Courses, LTC 630 and LTC 710, will be offered in Utah for the first time.  Attendees will not want to miss the Conference Luncheon on Saturday, April 17, when the UIAAA will honor five deserving individuals with awards.  The various workshop topics are listed under the tentative conference agenda found on the UIAAA webpage (uiaaa.org).  Some sessions will offer several choices for attendees.  

Golf Tournament – The UIAAA will host a Golf Tournament at 8:00 a. m., Friday, April 16, 2010.  Josten’s is once again generously sponsoring the tournament, which will be held at Sky Mountain Golf Course in Hurricane.  See the registration form for cost.

UIAAA Functions – The CAA Examination will once again be offered at the state conference,

2:00 p. m. Friday April 16, 2010.  Information about the CAA examination, including the steps to qualify, cost, and a study guide, can be obtained at the NIAAA website (niaaa.org).  An administrator must have successfully completed LTC 501, LTC 502 and LTC 504 as part of the requirement to qualify to become a CAA.  (LTC 506 will be added in January of 2011)   Athletic Administrators are strongly encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to become a Certified Athletic Administrator while attending this year’s conference.

Many Leadership Training Courses will be offered on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning before the official beginning of the conference.  Below is a list of the courses offered this year.

LTC 501 Athletic Administration: Philosophy, Leadership Organizations and Professional Development   This will be a separate leadership class and is not part of the regular conference.

The flagship course of Leadership Training serves as an overview for interscholastic athletic administration. This course introduces the philosophy of educational athletics then focuses on the roles of the NIAAA, the NFHS, the State Athletic/Activity Associations, and the State Athletic Administrator’s Associations. The course also previews the NIAAA Leadership Training and Certification Programs. It is a prerequisite for all levels of certification and includes study materials for the CAA Certification Examination.  Enrollees who will derive greatest benefit: Athletic administrators seeking to learn more about educational athletics, national organizations, and those interested in pursuing the certification process. This course is a recommended prerequisite to all other LTP courses.  Required for: RAA, CAA and CMAA Certification

LTC 504 Athletic Administration: Legal Issues I (Risk Management)  This will be a separate leadership class and is not part of the regular conference.  This course has in-depth coverage of all aspects of liability for sports injuries and risk management, including the duties imposed on athletic administrators, coaches, athletic trainers, and other athletic personnel, documentation requirements for an effective risk management program, and development of a strategic plan for risk management in the context of an interscholastic athletic program.  Enrollees who will derive greatest benefit: Administrators seeking information concerning Constitutional law and the need of exposure to causes for negligence and to legal “Standards of Care  Required for: CAA and CMAA Certification

LTC 630 Athletic Administration: Interscholastic Contest Management - Planning, Preparation and Methods (New Course - 2009 Release  - 1st time offered in Utah)  This will be a separate leadership class and is not part of the regular conference.  This course examines the historic foundations and precedents for contest management as an extension of educationally sound sports programs. Planning methods for contest management are examined including selection of supervisory personnel, suggested need assessment tools, and checklists for the development of supervision plans and policies. In addition, an overview of methods is suggested for creation of an educationally sound competition environment among players, coaches, students and other spectators. Course appendices provide assessment tools and examples of contemporary management practices. These tools are also contained on an attached compact disc for local reproduction, discussions and planning.  Enrollees who will derive the greatest benefit: Administrators seeking to increase knowledge of event planning methods in order to develop policies, enhance safety and provide assessment surrounding contest management. 

LTC 710 Athletic Administration: Current Issues in American Sports – (1st time offered in Utah)  This will be a separate leadership class and is not part of the regular conference.  A panel of secondary level athletic administrators and outside experts will lead small group discussions of important issues and effective response strategies for 3-5 topics of contemporary issues selected annually. The topics will be examined by using a moderator to guide the discussion and cover certain aspects of the topic. Participants will have an opportunity to participate in the discussion. The instructional format of the course will consist of lecture, seminar discussion and audience interaction.  Enrollees who will derive greatest benefit: Administrators seeking discussion of current issues and problem resolution strategies.

4-Wheel Excursion –Doug Snell, AD at Spanish Fork High School, will be organizing a 4-wheel excursion after 4pm on Thursday.  Anyone who is interested should contact Doug at doug.snell@nebo.edu

Conference Registration - Conference registration forms can be found and downloaded at the UIAAA website (uiaaa.org)(after Nov. 11, 2009) and will not be mailed this year.  Similar to last year’s conference, the conference has expanded our workshops from 4 to 6 and offered the LTC Wednesday night and Thursday morning, as well as more time for networking with fellow athletic administrators between sessions.  The conference registration fees will not be raised.  The fees will stay at $180 (for the fifth consecutive year) prior to January 31, 2010.  From February 1 until March 15, 2010 the fee is $200, and after that date and in person the fee will be $220.  The conference fee includes the following:
